Bath Rugs & Mats

Ten listings that all say non-slip, and none that say what that means.

The jobabsorbing water and staying where you put it

Every listing in this category uses some version of the words non-slip, non-skid or rubber backing. Not one of them attaches a measurement, a test method or a standard to it. Those are seller descriptions of a material, and this catalog treats them that way throughout.

What a mat genuinely does is take water off your feet so that less of it reaches the floor. That is real and it is useful and it is a different claim from making a floor safe.

The useful comparison here is size and construction, because those are the two things the listings actually state. Chenille, microfiber, waffle weave and memory foam behave differently in absorbency, drying time and thickness, and thickness is what decides whether your bathroom door still closes.

How these 9 listings are ordered

Ordered by how directly the listing addresses the job of absorbing water and staying put: stated absorbency and drying properties first, then stated size. Nothing here is ordered on grip, because no listing states a grip figure.

Every figure quoted below is taken from the listing it sits on. Nothing here was measured, weighed, loaded or tested, and where a listing states no figure this catalog says so rather than estimating one.

OLANLY Chenille Bath Rug, 30 x 20 in

Chenille, quick-drying, full size

The listing states all three at once: chenille pile, quick drying, and a 30 by 20 in footprint.

OLANLY Chenille Bath Rug, 30 x 20 in

Portable mount in sectionA wall seen edge on, hatched on the far side. A handled container rests on the floor line well clear of it, touching nothing.
Portable

The listing states chenille, quick-drying, rubber backing, machine washable.

A 30 by 20 inch chenille mat, which is the full-size footprint for standing in front of a tub or a vanity. The listing states quick-drying chenille, a rubber backing and machine washability. Rubber backing is a construction detail from the listing, not a grip measurement.

Stated size
30 x 20 in (per listing)
More on the OLANLY Chenille Bath Rug, 30 x 20 in

In its favor

  • Chenille has a lot of surface area, so it takes up the water that runs off you rather than spreading it around.
  • Quick-drying is stated, which matters more than absorbency in a room with poor ventilation.
  • A stated 30 by 20 in covers the step-out zone rather than sitting under one foot.
  • Machine washable per the listing, so it can go through a cycle when it starts to smell of the room.

Against it

  • The rubber backing is described, not rated; it loses grip with age and with washing.
  • Deep chenille pile holds water inside itself, so it needs to be hung up rather than left flat on tile.
  • The listing does not state a pile height, so how much it lifts a door clearance is unknown.

Best for

The main step-out spot in a bathroom that gets used every day and gets the mat washed regularly.

GORILLA GRIP Chenille Bath Rug, 24 x 17 in

Absorbent chenille, no dry-time claim

The listing states absorbency and a rubber backing but makes no quick-dry statement, unlike the mats above and below it.

GORILLA GRIP Chenille Bath Rug, 24 x 17 in

Portable mount in sectionA wall seen edge on, hatched on the far side. A handled container rests on the floor line well clear of it, touching nothing.
Portable

The listing states absorbent chenille, rubber backing, machine washable.

A 24 by 17 inch chenille mat with a rubber backing, stated as absorbent and machine washable. It is a smaller footprint than the 30 inch mats, which suits a mat that lives beside a vanity rather than in front of a tub.

Stated size
24 x 17 in (per listing)
More on the GORILLA GRIP Chenille Bath Rug, 24 x 17 in

In its favor

  • A 24 by 17 in footprint fits between a vanity and a door swing where a 30 inch mat fouls.
  • Chenille described as absorbent, which is the property that decides whether the floor stays dry.
  • Machine washable, stated, and a smaller mat is easier to fit into a normal load.
  • Rubber backing is part of the construction rather than a separate pad you buy after.

Against it

  • The listing states no quick-dry property, so it may stay damp longer than mats that do.
  • Small enough that one long step can miss it entirely on the way out of a tub.
  • Rubber backings stiffen and curl at the corners over time, and a curled corner is a trip edge.

Best for

The floor in front of a sink, or a second mat where a full-size one would block a door.

OLANLY Microfiber Bath Rug, 30 x 20 in

Microfiber rather than chenille

Same stated 30 by 20 in footprint as the chenille mat, listed in a different fiber.

OLANLY Microfiber Bath Rug, 30 x 20 in

Portable mount in sectionA wall seen edge on, hatched on the far side. A handled container rests on the floor line well clear of it, touching nothing.
Portable

The listing states microfiber, non-slip rubber backing, machine washable.

The same 30 by 20 inch footprint as the chenille version, built in microfiber instead. The listing uses the words non-slip rubber backing. Non-slip is the seller’s description of the material, not a friction rating and not a standard.

Stated size
30 x 20 in (per listing)
More on the OLANLY Microfiber Bath Rug, 30 x 20 in

In its favor

  • Microfiber sits lower than chenille, so a door clears it more easily.
  • A stated 30 by 20 in, the larger of the two footprints offered in this category.
  • A flatter pile shows dirt sooner, which is a strange advantage: you wash it when it needs it.
  • Machine washable per the listing.

Against it

  • Non-slip is the listing’s wording. Nothing on a wet tile floor is non-slip, and a wet floor under a mat is the case that matters.
  • Microfiber holds less water than deep chenille of the same size.
  • The listing does not state a pile height or a weight.

Best for

A bathroom with a door that swings inward over the mat and cannot take the loft of chenille.

TYUU Waffle Bath Mat, 30 x 20 in

Waffle weave, single mat

A flat waffle construction sold on its own, distinct from the pile mats and from the waffle set further down.

TYUU Waffle Bath Mat, 30 x 20 in

Portable mount in sectionA wall seen edge on, hatched on the far side. A handled container rests on the floor line well clear of it, touching nothing.
Portable

The listing states a waffle weave, non-slip backing, quick dry, washable.

A flat woven waffle mat at 30 by 20 inches, stated as quick dry with a non-slip backing. Waffle weave is a very different object from a plush rug: it holds less water at once and gives it up faster.

Stated size
30 x 20 in (per listing)
More on the TYUU Waffle Bath Mat, 30 x 20 in

In its favor

  • A flat weave dries much faster than pile, which is the whole point in a room that never fully airs out.
  • A stated 30 by 20 in, the full step-out footprint.
  • Waffle texture launders back to flat rather than matting down the way pile does.
  • Quick dry is stated alongside washability, so it can go through a cycle without a long line-dry after.

Against it

  • Non-slip is listing wording, not a measurement, and a thin flat mat can slide across wet tile.
  • A waffle weave holds less standing water than chenille, so a heavy drip will get past it.
  • The listing does not state a thickness or a weight.

Best for

A bathroom with no window and no fan, where the mat needs to be dry again before the next person uses it.

OLANLY Memory Foam Bath Rug, 30 x 20 in

Only memory foam listed

The single listing in this category built on a memory foam core rather than a woven or pile face.

OLANLY Memory Foam Bath Rug, 30 x 20 in

Portable mount in sectionA wall seen edge on, hatched on the far side. A handled container rests on the floor line well clear of it, touching nothing.
Portable

The listing states memory foam, non-slip, quick dry, machine washable.

A 30 by 20 inch mat with a memory foam core, stated as quick dry, machine washable and non-slip. The foam is a comfort feature, not a grip feature, and the listing’s non-slip wording applies to the backing.

Stated size
30 x 20 in (per listing)
More on the OLANLY Memory Foam Bath Rug, 30 x 20 in

In its favor

  • The one memory foam construction in this category, which is a real difference underfoot on cold tile.
  • A stated 30 by 20 in footprint.
  • Quick dry is stated despite the thickness, which is not a given with foam.
  • Machine washable per the listing, though a foam core takes longer to dry through than a woven mat.

Against it

  • Foam is the thickest option here, and thickness is what catches on an inward-swinging door.
  • A foam core soaks through and stays wet inside long after the surface feels dry.
  • Non-slip is stated by the seller; a thick soft mat can walk across a wet floor when you step off the edge of it.

Best for

A bathroom where standing comfort matters more than drying speed, with a door that clears a thick mat.

TYUU Thin Low-Pile Bath Mat, 16 x 24 in

Only mat listed as low-pile

It is the one listing in this category that states a low pile height as a property of the mat.

TYUU Thin Low-Pile Bath Mat, 16 x 24 in

Portable mount in sectionA wall seen edge on, hatched on the far side. A handled container rests on the floor line well clear of it, touching nothing.
Portable

The listing states a thin low-pile chenille mat, non-slip, washable.

A deliberately thin chenille mat at 16 by 24 inches, stated as low pile, non-slip and washable. Thinness is the feature: it exists for doorways and tight clearances where a normal mat jams.

Stated size
16 x 24 in (per listing)
More on the TYUU Thin Low-Pile Bath Mat, 16 x 24 in

In its favor

  • Low pile is stated outright, which is the property you want under a door that only just clears the floor.
  • A 16 by 24 in footprint slots into narrow gaps beside a toilet or a vanity toe kick.
  • Thin chenille washes and dries faster than deep pile of the same area.
  • Small enough to have two of them and rotate one through the wash.

Against it

  • Less material means less absorbency; this is not the mat for the main step-out.
  • Thin mats are the easiest to kick out of position, and non-slip here is a description rather than a rating.
  • The listing does not state a pile height in numbers, only that it is low.

Best for

A door that scrapes, a narrow strip beside the toilet, or any place a full mat will not lie flat.

Yimobra Plush Bath Mat, 24 x 17 in

Plush pile at the compact size

The listing states a plush microfiber face on the smaller 24 by 17 in footprint.

Yimobra Plush Bath Mat, 24 x 17 in

Portable mount in sectionA wall seen edge on, hatched on the far side. A handled container rests on the floor line well clear of it, touching nothing.
Portable

The listing states microfiber, non-slip, water absorbent, washable.

A 24 by 17 inch plush microfiber mat, stated as water absorbent, washable and non-slip. It sits between the flat weaves and the foam: soft underfoot without the bulk of a foam core.

Stated size
24 x 17 in (per listing)
More on the Yimobra Plush Bath Mat, 24 x 17 in

In its favor

  • Plush microfiber gives the underfoot feel of pile with less water trapped in the base.
  • A 24 by 17 in footprint, the compact size in this category.
  • Water absorbent is stated as a property rather than implied by the fiber name.
  • Washable per the listing, and a compact plush mat recovers its loft after a cycle better than a large one.

Against it

  • Non-slip is the seller’s word for the backing, with no rating attached.
  • Plush pile mats need shaking out; grit works down into them and stays there.
  • The listing states neither pile height nor backing material by name.

Best for

A small bathroom that wants something soft underfoot without committing to a foam slab.

Two-piece sets

Two pieces sold together, usually a larger mat and a smaller one. Check the stated sizes rather than assuming a set covers a whole floor.

Only set described as extra thick

Extra thick chenille appears on this listing alone among the two-piece sets.

H.VERSAILTEX Bath Rug Set, 32 x 20 and 24 x 17 in

Portable mount in sectionA wall seen edge on, hatched on the far side. A handled container rests on the floor line well clear of it, touching nothing.
Portable

The listing states extra thick chenille, striped, non-skid.

Two chenille pieces, stated at 32 by 20 and 24 by 17 inches, described as extra thick and striped with a non-skid backing. The pair covers a step-out zone and a sink zone in one purchase.

Stated size
32 x 20 in and 24 x 17 in (per listing)
More on the H.VERSAILTEX Bath Rug Set, 32 x 20 and 24 x 17 in

In its favor

  • The only set here described as extra thick, which is a stated construction difference rather than a size difference.
  • Two stated sizes in one box covers the tub and the vanity without matching purchases later.
  • A striped face hides the water marks that show badly on a flat color.
  • Chenille in both pieces, so they wash together on the same cycle.

Against it

  • Non-skid is the listing’s word; extra thickness raises the mat higher off the floor, which raises the trip edge too.
  • The listing states no drying claim, and extra thick pile is the slowest thing here to dry.
  • Thick mats are the most likely to foul a door that swings inward.

Best for

Furnishing a whole bathroom floor at once, in a room with enough door clearance for deep pile.

MIULEE Waffle Bath Rug Set, 18 x 30 in

Only waffle set listed

The single waffle weave sold as a two-piece set in this category; the other waffle listing is a single mat.

MIULEE Waffle Bath Rug Set, 18 x 30 in

Portable mount in sectionA wall seen edge on, hatched on the far side. A handled container rests on the floor line well clear of it, touching nothing.
Portable

The listing states a waffle weave, non-slip, rubber backed, washable.

A waffle weave set at a stated 18 by 30 inches, rubber backed and washable. It is the flat-weave option among the sets, so it dries far faster than the chenille pairs and holds less water while doing it.

Stated size
18 x 30 in (per listing; the second piece is not dimensioned)
More on the MIULEE Waffle Bath Rug Set, 18 x 30 in

In its favor

  • The one waffle construction offered as a set rather than as a single mat.
  • Flat weave means both pieces dry between uses in a room with no fan.
  • A stated 18 by 30 in, close to the full step-out footprint.
  • Rubber backing and washability are both stated, so the backing is meant to survive the wash.

Against it

  • The listing states one size for the set, so the second piece’s dimensions are unknown until it arrives.
  • Non-slip is the seller’s description of the backing and nothing more.
  • A waffle weave holds less water than pile, so a heavy drip reaches the floor.

Best for

Two spots in a damp bathroom that both need to dry out fully between uses.

Four things worth knowing before you buy

Measure the door swing before the floor

The most common failure of a bath mat is that it stops the door. A memory foam or extra thick chenille mat can be an inch or more of pile, and an inward-swinging bathroom door typically has very little clearance to give.

Drying speed matters more than absorbency in a closed bathroom

A mat that holds a lot of water and never dries is a mat that smells. In a room with no window and no working fan, a waffle weave or a low-pile mat will serve you better than a deep plush one.

A backing is a consumable

Rubber and latex backings stiffen, crack and lose grip with age, heat and washing. A mat whose corners have started to curl has told you the backing is finished, whatever the listing said when you bought it.

Two mats beat one big one

A mat that can go through the wash while the other one is in use is a mat that gets washed. One large mat that has to be there every day tends not to.

Everything here attaches the same way

5 questions people actually ask

Does a non-slip bath mat stop me slipping?

Non-slip is the wording sellers use to describe a backing material. It is not a measurement and there is no test result behind it on any listing here. A wet bathroom floor is slippery, a mat can slide on wet tile, and the backing loses grip as it ages and after washing. Nothing on this site can prevent a fall and nothing here claims to.

Can I put a bath mat in the shower or the tub?

Not unless the manufacturer states the mat is made for use inside a tub or shower. These are floor mats. A mat designed to sit on a bathroom floor behaves differently on the wet, curved, soapy floor of an enclosure.

Chenille or waffle weave?

Chenille holds far more water and takes far longer to dry. Waffle weave holds less and gives it up quickly. If your bathroom ventilates well, chenille is more comfortable. If it does not, waffle weave stays usable and chenille turns into a damp object on your floor.

How often should these be washed?

Follow the care label on the specific mat, which is the only instruction that applies to your one. As a habit, a mat that stays damp between uses needs washing more often than one that dries out, and hanging it up between uses does more for it than any wash cycle.

Why does the floor under my mat look discolored?

Because a mat lying flat on a wet floor keeps the water between itself and the surface, where it cannot evaporate. Lift mats to dry, and move them occasionally so the same patch of floor is not permanently covered.
