Tension mounts
Two surfaces pushed apart, held only by the friction that pressure creates.
A tension mount holds nothing. Friction holds it, and the mount supplies the pressure that friction needs. A spring or a threaded pole pushes outward between floor and ceiling, or between two walls, and everything else follows from how much grip that pressure buys.
It is the only mount here whose holding force is stored energy pressing permanently into two surfaces. That energy does not go away while it is installed, which is why a tension pole left up for two years leaves a dished mark on a ceiling and a compressed circle in vinyl flooring.
A bathroom is the worst room for it. Tension needs dry, high-friction, rigid contact, and a bathroom offers wet, low-friction, sometimes flexible contact instead. A tension rod in a shower that creeps down half an inch a month is not defective; it is doing exactly what friction does when the contact surface is wet.

What holds it

- Light hanging loads spread along a rod, which is why shower curtains and light corner poles are the classic use.
- Spans where nothing may be fixed to either end, which is a real rental advantage.
- Dry, rigid, high-friction contact surfaces. A painted wall stud line and a solid ceiling are good. Wet glazed tile is not.

How it comes apart
5 ways this mount stops doing its job, in the order they turn up in practice.
- Creep. Under load on a wet or slick surface, the pole walks slowly downward, and it usually finishes doing that at three in the morning.
- Losing pressure as temperature swings. A hot shower expands everything in the room and a cold night contracts it, and the pole is only as tight as its last adjustment.
- Contact on a surface that is not rigid. Push a tension pole against a drywall panel between studs and the panel flexes, absorbs the pressure and gives back none of the friction you paid for.
- Over-tightening, which is the intuitive response to creep and which can crack tile, dent a ceiling or bow a panel.
- Any sideways load at all. Tension mounts resist downward slip poorly and lateral push worse.

What it leaves behind
Pressure marks at both ends, and sometimes a cracked tile or a dished ceiling.
- A compressed circle in vinyl or a dished patch in a ceiling where the pad has been pressing for months.
- Rubber pad transfer onto a painted surface, which usually cleans off and occasionally does not.
- Cracked or spalled tile if it was ever over-tightened, which is not repairable.
- Nothing is bonded and nothing is drilled, so the marks are the whole story unless something cracked.

Before you put one up
- A tension pole that creeps under load can come down with everything on it. Do not put one where it would fall across a bathtub, and check the tightness of any tension mount in a wet room regularly.
- Over-tightening to stop creep can crack tile and dent ceilings. If it will not hold at a normal setting, the surface is wrong for the mount.
If you rent
Reasonable for a renter for light loads on dry, rigid surfaces, and poor inside a wet shower. Nothing is fixed, so removal is a matter of unwinding it, but pressure marks at both ends are the normal result and a cracked tile from over-tightening is damage. Do not solve creep by tightening harder. Your lease is the document that decides what counts as damage; read it.
